The John J. Meany Affordable Senior Housing, formerly the Middle Street YMCA Housing project, is a new construction project that will include 44 units of affordable senior housing. There were several key design considerations including the desire for this project to fit in well with the historic downtown neighborhood. This ground up infill development is situated in a prime downtown location that will provide its future residents with easy pedestrian access to all downtown Gloucester has to offer.
The exterior of the building relates well to the rhythm, scale, and materials of its architectural context featuring a blend of red brick, clapboards, commercial storefront windows, and standing seam metal roofing accents. Another goal of the project was to meet the new senior housing guidelines and standards for aging in place to allow the project’s residents to have the features and amenities to fully enjoy this new building.
